His claim to fame is appearing on the first season of American Idol. While he doesn’t win or even make the final three, his presence on the show gives him the exposure that allows to him to make an album. It gives him the chance to display his talents as both a singer and songwriter. While many other Idol contestants (non winners) have debut mediocre albums, RJ’s album “Real Life” is a real surprise.

The album begins with the powerful ballad “Even If.” It’s a song of dedication to God and “even if the sun refuses to shine” that God is still the love one’s life. While it’s surprising the song is the first one, it sets the listener for the many other ballads such as “Love Song.” It’s the proclamation of offer a love song to the Most High due to His love. With strong vocals and musical arrangements, RJ creates a beautiful yet simple song. As a bonus, the last track is a Spanish version of “Love Song.” And even in Spanish and not understanding one word, the beauty is translated through.

RJ hits on tough issues with ballads “Delicate Child” and “Forgive.” The issue of abuse and the damage it causes are the focus of “Delicate Child.” While the abuse cause pain and deep wounds, it doesn’t kill the soul because it “still can breathe.” As the title suggest, “Forgive” is about finding a way to forgive the way God has forgiven. But it’s a tough road especially after a broken spirit.

There are a few upbeat numbers for the listener to step to such as “My Devotion” and “Freedom.” However, the best of these is “Why Don’t We Pray.” As the title suggest, it contemplates this question during times of trouble. However, the catchy chorus gives the song a stronger quality of urgency.

Strongly influence by pop and R&B musical styles, RJ uses his Latino heritage throughout the album. Each song touches on the Spanish cords and arrangements to give a new favor to the traditional styles. “Real Life” will be a real treat for those fans of the pop genre.
