If any college boys are looking for a new hero and the fans of David Gray, Adam Cohen or Travis are on the hunt for something original, Tom Wehrle may just be the man of the hour. His 2003 release `Something You Can’t Find` is an energetic foray into straight-ahead `good bloke` rock music. Even though the mainstream of the genre might be wearing thin, Wehrle seems to be a `true believer` in the power of two guitars, a bass, some drums and a passionate lyric.

The album starts off with a steady canter (though the kazoo solo is not something I would have suggested) and it rounds the raucous (`Something Isn’t Right`) the folksy (`Moving On`) the contemplative (`Tired`) and some rewarding ground in between. Also it’s worth noting that Wehrle is an accomplished musician and the `thank you` notes on the back page of the inlay clearly shows he has his feet on the ground.

Overall the album deserves much rotation on college stations, but like Jason Morant and Todd Smith he seems to have a head and a heart full of ideas but hasn’t quite figured out which direction he’s headed. This is by no means a bad thing (and of all people, college boys are noted for looking beyond the superficial in their music) but the quicker he gets a bead on his own musical journeying the quicker he’ll become the force he deserves to be.
