There is an anointing on Steven McCoy to minister to the youth and young adults and it’s evident not just because his group, Greater Purpose, is comprised of the same but also because of the sound that flows from the music and lyrics on his CD titled “Strivin’ Da Struggle.” It is filled with different messages that will encourage, inspire and draw listeners into a spirit of praise and adoration.
“No Doubt” will fuel your faith to the level where no one can make you doubt Him. What better way to get you to remember the message than to do it with a snazzy beat. Top it all off with the awesome talents of Natalie Wilson to keep you hype and you have a perfect blend. Bring in the neo-soul gospel sound with “Faith.” This is one of my favorite tracks because of the instrumentation and I am crazy about those stupid (I mean stupid like “good” or “wonderful”) horns. They drive me crazy especially with those retarded (once again “good” or “wonderful”) chord changes. Please excuse me but Michael Moore needs to be shot (okay do I have to say it again?) for killing (you should be with me by now) the drums so beautifully( hope you are not confused by now). Not to mention it is a song of faith that talks about the just shall live by faith.
Greater Purpose takes us to church with “My Soul Says Yes” only set to a little jazz sound. They get a chance to display their supreme vocal abilities. “Heaven Belongs To You” is an age old message with a contemporary sound. (Besides the fact that it got my horns in there again) I enjoy this song. The upbeat groove, “We Worship You” is a little short but it is tight and catchy.
Strivin Da Struggle is easy to grow on you and has some ear pleasing melodies and soul searching messages. Steven McCoy and Greater Purpose are on the move and I hope and pray they get the exposure to take their ministry to higher heights.
