”Set Me Free” is that kind of CD that changes what you thought was normal choir music and adds an enhancement of what was typical three part harmony and births a new sound. Working with people like Kirk Franklin, God’s Property, Smokie Norful, Kim Burrell, Men Of Standard, Trinitee 5:7, Twinkie Clark, Tamela Mann and Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers, it’s no wonder Myron Butler’s ear for production and writing is so unique. He is accompanied by Levi which is his 12-member ensemble that sings more like a large choir.
I have my few standout cuts and my first pick is ”Set Me Free” which is the title cut and the breakout single from this group. It kind of sounds like a hyper party track from the disco era and then the bouncy beat takes you right into church and before you know it you go from party to praisin’. I think that’s the way it should be. ”That Place” has a very familiar feel to it which is probably why I immediately fell in love with it. Not to mention the lush instrumentation filled chops and cuts that caused me to listen to it about 25 times the first day I got it and still going (literally). ”That’s Who You Are” is one of my favorite worship songs on this album not just because I love beautiful worship songs but because of what the harmonies are doing and the music that compliments the potent lyrics throughout the track.
I recommend this album to anyone who loves and appreciates real music and realizes the need for more of it. There is no doubt that people will love and thank God for Myron Butler and Levi as I have.
