Manhunt: What do you enjoy most about doing PR?
Lenz: I love the fact that every day is different. You always try to make a basic plan for the day, and it actually happens the way you think.
Manhunt: Whom do you currently represent?
Lenz: With Velocity Entertainment I am working with Scott Grimes and The Red Letters; with Floodgate Records I have The Myriad, Kate Miner, Rita Springer, Forever Changed, Mourning September, Transition, Curt Mangan Guitar Strings, The Smoking Popes, and today I'm putting together a press kit for Stavesacre. I also have some video game stuff in the works, and do side work for bands like Everlife.
Manhunt: What is the most challenging part of your job?
Lenz: Invoicing. People don't always like to pay their bills. That's no fun.
Manhunt: How did you get started in public relations?
Lenz: I fell into it. I was working for management companies and labels, and just decided to go out on my own. Public Relations is something that everyone needs, so you can constantly re-create how you do things to fit the needs of your clients.
Manhunt: If you had to come up with a list of five crucial elements in a publicity campaign, what would it be?
Lenz: A concise bio/one sheet, as little paper as possible, clients who are available to work and are easy to track down when you need them, clear set of goals, and persistence.
Manhunt: What advice would you give someone trying to get started in public relations?
Lenz: Get used to not sleeping much! Buy 3 books: Everything You Need to Know about the Music Business, The Elements of Style and Guerilla PR. Get a great database program. Stand up when you talk on the phone and make sure people aren't on deadlines when you try to call. When someone says no - it's not personal, and you can't take it personal...They know their audience, and you need to not push them too hard. Then finally, just start doing it. There is no right way to do PR, so just figure out what works for you and get to it!
