Title: Sharecropper’s Seed Volume 1
Reviewer: Garfield White
Even before her debut album was released in 2000, Nicole C. Mullen has worked with gospel artists to spread the word of God through music. From doing back-up singing in studio recording sessions to being nominated for and winning several gospel awards, this songstress brings us her latest album entitled, Sharecropper’s Seed, Volume 1.
The album consists of 10 tracks easy listening tracks that speak a strong message of God’s goodness. There is a personal feel as though every song come straight from Nicole’s heart. The strong acoustic sound carries the listener throughout the album with simple baseline’s, piano and guitar chords. There are no loud horns, 30 member choirs or big orchestrated bands on the album. You are getting a humble sounding Nicole expressing her love for the Lord
‘One Touch’ speaks on the thought of Nicole being able to touch the hem of His garment is a ballad that speaks of the joy in getting close to Jesus. ‘When I Grow Up’ paints has an innocent sound of Mullen wanting to grow up spiritually and be more like the Jesus. The African drums speak out the wonders of God on ‘Under The Shadow’ as Nicole chants “My God, in Him will I trust” on the faith strengthening track. “Love the Lord with all your heart, your soul, your mind and strength” are some basic bible instruction Nicole gives the listener on the soulful sounding ‘I Wish’.
It’s not hard to see that Nicole is deeply planted in the Lord growing closer to Him. Sharecropper’s Seed shows personal growth in Mullen’s personal relationship with God. Calm, soothing and spiritual is the sound which gives the album a unique character. I’m looking forward to Volume 2.
