Sy Smith:Ambient Soul

Published on October 31, 2006

Sy_Smith_Press_Photo_982.jpgSy Smith’s ambient soul owes itself to the singer’s background of chorale study, avid listening of modern music and gigs supporting the likes of Whitney Houston, Brandy, Usher, Macy Gray, Eric Benet, Ginuwine and Meshell Ndegeocello. East Coast roots in New York and Washington D.C. exposed Ms. Smith to everything from go-go to rock in her family’s home and the melange of acts playing in the city. The Syberspace Social is the first album of her unfettered trippy funk to make it to print.

Record Review: William Murphy - All Day

williammurphy.jpgTitle: All Day
Artist:The William Murphy Project
Record Label: Sony Urban
Review by: Deveron Patterson

There are vocalists, musicians, and all sorts of interpreters that have beautiful expressions that can be found anywhere. But there are only a handful of those that are innately gifted and anointed of God that combine all those elements that breeds a powerful result and William Murphy is one of them. William has a voice that’s sheer and strong as well as gut-wrenching that leaves you spell bound.

With the current release ‘All Day’, Mr. Murphy is sure to be one of those artists you look forward to hearing from in the future. Known for his mega hit “Praise is what I do”, has become a standard and will be a score for one of the biggest praise and worship tunes ever written. There’s not a ministry that hasn’t incorporated this particular song in their services, which was originally recorded about 4 or 5 yrs ago by The Shekinah Glory ministry, who, by the way, are enjoying a new level of success themselves in the gospel music community. Today, Mr. Murphy pastors the Dream Center church of Atlanta, GA. Mr. Murphy is the husband of one wife and the father of four children; William IV, Paul Christian, David Benjamin, and Keilah Lauren.

Now finally after years of hard work and perseverance comes the William Murphy project. A powerful offering from this young brother who, by the way, isn’t just an artist, but a minister, which becomes clear as you listen. Mr. Murphy puts a new twist on the Holland Davis penned “Let It Rise”, a current hit that’s getting major spins. There are a lot of songs on here that will surely bless you like ‘Created to worship‘, which he beautifully segue ways into the hit ‘Praise Is What I Do’. Then there are other tunes that are power packed like the opening ‘So Good’ and a heart felt piece called ‘Be Strong‘ where William is joined by his beloved father Bishop Murphy Sr. All Day is sure to be an album to listen to for years to come.

Police Seek To Question DJ Webstar, Young B. As Witnesses To Shooting

Published on October 30, 2006

Police are seeking to question the duo behind the hit single “Chicken Noodle Soup” after a shooting at a Halloween party in Harlem on Friday (Oct. 27) left a 13-year-old girl clinging to life. Authorities believe DJ Webstar and Young B may have witnessed the shooting of Mozena Jones, an honor student who was shot after the Halloween party at the Lehman Village Houses. More than 100 teens were present at the function, where the group allegedly performed the hit single “Chicken Noodle Soup.” After the party, which ended around 11:45 pm, numerous teens congregated near E. 106th street. Jones stayed behind to help organizers of the party clean up, but as she was leaving shortly after midnight, a gunman drove by in a vehicle and shot into the crowd. The 13-year-old was struck in the torso. The shot damaged several of Jones’ vital organs, including her lungs, liver, spleen and colon. She was rushed to Harlem Hospital where surgeons operated on her several times in an attempt to save her life.

Nas Proves Hip-Hop Is Alive On New LP, Single

Published on

Nasir Jones has a message: Something is terribly wrong with the state
of hip-hop today.

One of the greatest MCs to ever pick up a microphone, Nas has watched
as his beloved hip-hop has gone from its innocent days of B-Boy battles
and lyrical sport to today’s fake-thug posturing and commercial
excesses, and he’s got something to say about it. Throughout his storied
career - which began with 1994’s classic Illmatic and has spanned the last
decade with over 12 million albums sold - Nas has been more than just
the genre’s foremost lyricist and thinker. He has become a statesman,
some would argue hip-hop’s “conscience.”

50 Cent Wins ‘In Da Club’ Copyright Case

Published on October 29, 2006

Rapper 50 Cent won a victory in a Miami Court yesterday (Oct. 27) when a judge threw out a copyright infringement lawsuit that accused the rapper of stealing the chorus to his hit single, “In Da Club.” Attorney Richard C. Wolfe filed the 27-page lawsuit in January on behalf of attorney Joseph Weinberger and Lil’ Joe Wein Music Company. The lawsuit claimed the chorus “Go Shorty, it’s you’re birthday…” from 50 Cent’s “In DA Club” was lifted from Luther “Luke” Campbell’s song “It’s Your Birthday.” U.S. District Judge Paul C. Huck ruled that the chorus was a “common, unoriginal, and noncopyrightable element of the song” and therefore cannot be protected. “We are pleased by the clarity brought by US District Judge Paul C. Huck by proclaiming what 50 and his team always knew was a frivolous and money grubbing attempt by the Lil’ Joe Wein Music Company,” 50 Cent’s manager Chris Lighty told AllHipHop.com.
